The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion reiterated that teachers will go on strike ahead of the national exams if the Ministry of Education won’t revise the new policies imposed on teachers, including the delocalization policy.
Speaking at Malinya stadium in Ikolomani Sub County, Kakamega County, during the Sub County official’s elections, Sossion said the issues of contention, including the controversial policies, should be dealt with by 5th October, or else there will be repercussions.
“We have given them enough time to remove the faults and the rest of the policies that are not part of academics from our table and give us the humble time needed to teach the students. If they’ll not have complied by then, they’ll miss supervisors to oversee exams,” said Sossion.
The KNUT boss faulted the delocalization policy, saying it’s a home wrecker. He said families are being separated on the basis of work, adding that it should be stopped immediately. He challenged the Education Ministry to deploy headteachers and teachers to communities they’re linguistically, culturally and emotionally connected to, as the law demands.
He further called upon the government to promptly pay retired public servants their pensions on time or choose to keep them on the payroll until their pensions are ready.
He explained that most public servants find it hard to survive after retirement given that their pay is suddenly cut off. He said the government should give a comprehensive medical cover to retired public servants to assure them of a good and healthy life after retirement.
