The Korean government has launched a five hundred million shillings water project at Terem to make the residents access the important commodity with ease.
The project is set to be completed in twenty months time and it is projected to benefit residents of Terem, Chwele and Nalondo.
Speaking during the launch of the water project at Terem primary school in Mt. Elgon, Water and Irrigation Cabinet secretary Eugene Ludovic Wamalwa said he talked to the Korean ambassador Kwon Young Dae to help fund the project and he agreed.
The Water CS asked the contractor to employ the local members of the community in the construction to help them get money to change their livelihood.
On his part the Korean ambassador Kwon Young Dae expressed the commitment of the Korean government to continue working with the Kenyan government to fund more projects in Kenya due to the mutual relationship between the two governments.
Bungoma County governor Ken Lusaka thanked ambassador Kwon Young Dae for initiating the project, saying the residents will have free access to water and water borne diseases that have been affecting residents shall be curbed.
He promised the County government’s support towards the implementation of the project saying water is one of the commodities that are basic to human beings.
Mt. Elgon MP John Bomet Serut called upon the implementers of the projects to ensure residents at the source in Mt. Elgon benefit from the project first, saying previous projects have been geared towards benefiting residents in other places yet area residents near the source don’t have water.
He also disclosed that next year, the Belgium government will be funding another project at Kaptama, a project he said will help the people of Kamukuywa and also the neighboring residents of Trans Nzoia County.
Kabuchai Member of Parliament Lusweti Mukwe also applauded the projects saying his constituents had suffered for a long period of time, given that they had to cover long distances to fetch water.
Political inclinations
Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka said they dissolved the New Ford Kenya party to join the Jubilee party because opinion polls have indicated that the party is likely to be the one that forms the next government, thus they have to ensure they are part of the government as early as now.
He said as a County government it is important to have a good relationship with the national government to spur development and have the government fund projects because of the good working relationship.
However on the flip-side, Mukwe said he is still in Ford Kenya party and supports Moses Wetangula’s presidency bid as a Luhya candidate saying people from western Kenya should follow suit.
