Leaders from West Pokot County have urged political leaders in the country to shun hate speech and ethnic incitement ahead of the August elections.
The leaders cited that politicians in the country were polarizing the nation and dividing Kenyans along tribal lines, and they called for political tolerance among politicians.
Led by Kapenguria Member of Parliament Mr Samuel Moroto and West Pokot Woman representative and independent candidate Mrs. Rodah Rotino, the leaders asked politicians to desist from making inflammatory statements that might plunge the country into chaos.
Speaking at Kopoch area, Mr. Moroto slammed NASA Presidential candidate Raila Odinga for dragging the military and police officers into political issues and making inciting remarks in Kajiado, telling residents that they should block outsiders from buying their land.
“This is a serious matter that should be investigated because it can cause chaos in the country,” said Moroto.
Moroto asked Kenyans to shun the leaders who were perpetrating the politics of hate and intolerance.
He added that Kenya should not witness a repeat of 2007-2008 skirmishes that led to bloodshed and displacements.
West Pokot woman representative Mrs. Rodah Rotino called for peace during this electioneering period. “We need peaceful elections because we’ll need each other after elections,” said Mrs. Rotino.
She also urged the Independent Electoral Commission [IEBC] to conduct free and fair elections.
