Likuyani Sub County residents have called on the County government of Kakamega to ensure that the tourism sector is improved in the area to boost the economic stature of the area.
Speaking at Kongoni during a public participation forum on County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) that brought together a number of stakeholders from the Sub County, the forum attendees observed that there exists a variety of tourist attraction sites in the area that hadn’t been fully exploited.
They named the Mawe Tatu hills and Mwikhupo waterfalls as among the attractions sites that have been ignored.
“The Mawe Tatu hills form a rare scenic view besides providing a habitat for a wide range of wildlife,” they said, adding that if well harnessed they could attract thousands of both international and domestic tourists.
They also revealed that Mwikhupo falls hidden along River Nzoia, a few meters from the hills has remained unexploited as no known authority has been able to have them catalogued.
They also called for effective utilization of forest zones in the area as wildlife rearing grounds a factor they predicted would form a stronger base for tourism. “In fact, we already have a rare species of a wild animal which resembles a lioness but has a single horn, living in Nzoia forest. We also have rare species of monkeys and white snakes
in this region,” they explained saying that it would be better for a section of the forest to be set aside just for the purpose of wildlife.
They at the same time called for investors to invest in the region and put up accommodations facilities for the visitors. “Investors should be encouraged to construct hotels and restaurants to provide accommodation to the visitors,” they noted.
The area Sub County administrator Dan Musita assured them that their proposal will be handed to the relevant department for deliberation and implementation.
