Chief Justice David Maraga has thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for addressing the judiciary’s lack of funds to adequately run its operations. In his Friday address, highlighting mainly the Finance Bill 2018/2019, President Kenyatta said he had proposed to have funding increased to bodies charged with fighting corruption, including the judiciary, “Specifically I have increased funding to the judiciary to speed up the completion of cases concerning corruption and economic crime. Further I have increased the allocation to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, and to investigative agencies,” he said.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Kahawa Court at the Kamiti Maximum prison security complex, CJ Maraga noted that the number of cases presented in courts has increased, especially corruption cases, “At this stage, I want to take this opportunity to thank the President for putting in a word for us with the Treasury to release funds to us to enable us to deal with those cases,” he said. He said that the cases will be dealt with expeditiously and according to the law.
The CJ revealed that with the funds coming in, the cases will be heard on a day to day basis, “It doesn’t mean that we are skipping any steps but the cases will be heard as quickly as possible so that we are able to deal with others,” he said. He said the suspects have nothing to worry about given that the cases will be handled according to the law and that if there is no evidence they’ll be acquitted, but if evidence is provided, they’ll definitely be convicted.
