The disaster management committee of Trans Nzoia West District has faulted the Kitale municipality on what it termed as gross misconduct on town planning.

This was revealed when the committee led by Trans Nzoia West DC who is also it is Chairman Mr. Wilfred Kinyua and Kitale police boss Mr. Lucas Ogara oversaw the demolitions of buildings and other structures along Sungura Street which has been blocked off by unscrupulous builders with parts being fenced off as private property.

The administrator noted that the exercise which had kicked off will be spread to all parts of the town until all service lines and streets grabbed are re-opened.

He said that the structures pose a health hazard during disasters and his committee would not sit and watch for an impending time bomb.

The demolitions will affect major buildings which include Trans Mattress supermarket which blocks the exit of the street.

This move did not go well with numerous hawkers who used the street as their selling points as they swore to fight their relocation, but were put on hold by the presence of administration police.

They went ahead and said that a private developer who was putting up a multi storey building and grabbed the street and that the local administration had been compromised.

But on interviewing the developer, he blamed the local authority citing that he in conjunction with the authority had issued a two month notice to the traders, but they defied the orders.

He noted that a few who were using his verandah thanked him for housing them for three years and relocated peacefully and it was only a few who wanted to scandalize the process.

The town clerk Mr. Rashid Mwakiwiwi said that he had been recently transferred to the town and that his office was yet to put up measures to reduce the rampant of cases attributed to bad town planning practices.

This comes barely a week after the Kitale municipality mayor Mr. Charles Bonyo stopped the construction of a maize milling factory in Tiwani estate blaming it on corruption on the part of the planning department of the municipal council.
