Kapsabet District Development Committee - DDC chaired by Nandi Central DC Ahmed Abdullahi has ordered town’s municipality to immediately relocate its dumpsite that is adjacent to town’s district hospital.

The DDC held their meeting on Monday following a public outcry that Kapsabet municipal council should seek alternative site to safe the residents from waterborne diseases during this rainy season.

They said that the site which also doubles up as a public cemetery was posing health hazards to the residents through its pollution of Chebirirbei River, a tributary of River Yalla.

In the meeting attended by town clerk Hammed Dore, Nandi county council clerk Henry Loyolmoi, NEMA county director Michael Komen and departmental heads from district public health office, Ahmed called for an end to “dirty display” of the municipal.

Ahmed said that the media had done well to display the tendency of the municipal to shy off from their duties adding that the site must be relocated in a week’s time.

“I have directed Kapsabet OCPD Nelson Okioga to ensure that there would be no one dumping wastes in the site one week from now,” Ahmed said.

Chairman of Friends of Nandi Environment (FOSA) Dr. John Chumo and medical superintendent Dr. Edward Serem had earlier raised complaints and led residents in protesting for immediate closure of the dumpsite.

Dr. Serem said that the facility was too close to the hospital and was dangerous to the health of the staff and patients.

The order by DDC has prompted officials of National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) from the national level to hold a meeting in Kapsabet with DC, Chumo, Serem and representatives from the municipal.

Dr. Chumo said that they would also visit the site with the officials so that they can confirm the reality of the matter.

“They have to know that what popped out in the media was not exaggerated. People’s lives are in danger,” he said.
