More than 400, 000 tree seedlings are set to be planted in various districts of Busia County this rainy season. According to the Busia Zonal forest manager James Were, the seedlings raised by local farmers in the area will be planted in Busia, Butula, Nambale, Samia and Bunyala districts to increase the forest cover in the area. “Farmers have raised nearly 400,000 tree seedlings that will be added to the 100,000 seedlings from the forest service for the planting exercise,” he said. He said they will launch a tree planting ceremony which will involve the public to raise awareness in the community on the importance of trees. “The district forest officers will liase with the District Commissioners in their respective districts to launch the exercise before the rains are over,” he said, speaking to journalists in Busia. He also said more trees have been set aside by the forest service in Busia for planting exercise in various schools, hospitals and public places. Were urged the local residents to embrace the planting exercise of trees following the increased benefits apart from timber. “Trees have various benefits that will help us improve our lives in the society. Those residing near hills in parts of Samia should ensure they plant trees on them despite relying on them as grazing zones for their domestic animals,” said the zonal forest officer. |
