Learning has been paralyzed in Nandi South district after hundreds of teachers led by KNUT officials demonstrated demanding that their DEO be transferred.

The teachers sent their pupils back home early in the morning on Friday and instead took leaflets and placard as they marched towards the District education officer’s (DEO) office in Kobujoi Township before heading to the District Commissioners office.

They accused the officer Abel Nyamwaya of harassing teachers and contributing to the decline in performance since he joined them in 2008.

The demonstration that happened for the third time within a period of a month attracted attention from teachers from the entire county and parents who also participated calling for immediate action by the ministry of education.

KNUT officials led by their national trustee Boniface Tenai, Nandi South executive secretary Stephen Misoi and Nandi East secretary Zipporah Kering took the forefront in presenting the plight of the teachers.

The relation between Nyamwaya and teachers went sour a month ago following 50 letters that he dispatched to heads of all primary schools in the district threatening them to interdiction.

Part of the letters dispatched read that head teachers “apologise in writing for walking out of March 29 meeting” convened by the officer.

Misoi said that teachers would not embark to teaching until the officer is transferred.

Both the DEO and the DC George Ayonga were not present during the demönstrations but DO1 John Mbugua calmed them down and assured them that the administration will take action immediately by presenting a letter to the Provincial Commissioner to give them directions on handling the matter.
