The provincial administration is laying strategies to build and promote peace among residents living in Lugari and its neighboring districts as the country heads toward electioneering period.

As part of this strategy, acting Lugari District Commissioner Mr. Richard Ajwang has launched a committee that will be in charge of handling peace and other related activities aimed at enhancing co-existence in the area.

While launching a 15 member Lugari Peace Committee Thursday, Ajwang urged the members to put in place campaign strategies which will see them reach out to area residents with peace messages, sensitizing them on the need to co-exist as a family with their neighbors regardless of one’s tribe, race, creed or political affiliations.

Mr. Ajwang asked the peace committee members to remain politically impartial in order for them to adequately discharge their duties without bias.

In his acceptance speech as the committee’s chairperson Mr. George Njoroge appealed to area residents and stakeholders to support the group’s efforts by spreading peace messages among their family members, neighbors and friends in order to make Lugari a haven of peace.

Njoroge also urged residents living along ethnic borders to promote and maintain peace, adding that the country should, at whatever cost, avoid a repeat of what happened in 2007/08 after the previous General Election.

The chairman disclosed that Lugari has 40 trained peace makers and 11 Trainer of Trainees (TOTs) under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and urged the trainees to come out and use skills learned and help promote peace in the area.

The district boss appealed to area residents to respect human life as a God given gift to everybody.
