Parents in Bunyala district have called on the government to intervene over the alleged sexual harassment to pupils by a female teacher at Budalang’i primary school.

They alleged that the head teacher of the school had failed to notify the education office of the saga when word reached his office about a female teacher reported to have seduced three male pupils for sexual affairs.  

Speaking at the school, the parents accused the district education office of favoring some teachers found to have committed various offences; a move they said would derail efforts of revamping education in the area.

“The education office should work closely with the stakeholders to ensure pupils learn in a conducive environment to register good results,” said Osborn Wanyama, parent’s spokesman, adding that it is time the education office was investigated.  

Speaking to West FM, two of the victims of sexual harassment aged 15 and 16 claimed the female teacher had promised to buy them several presents including money and mobile phones if at all they were silent over the issue.

The area district education officer Maurice Jayoro said they have launched investigations to ascertain truth over the allegations, adding that justice will take its course if at all the suspect will be found guilty of the offence.

“The community should give us time to undertake investigations which will help us take the appropriate action,” said Jayoro.

He however dismissed claims that his office was protecting and favoring certain teachers in the area despite having committed various offences.

The district children’s officer Morris Okiru said they are following up the issue closely to ensure the perpetrators are punished.

“This is a matter of concern that needs to be dealt with in a bid of ensuring pupils learning process is not interfered with,” he said, urging parents and pupils in the district to report any similar cases to the department for action to be taken.
