St Joseph’s Kocholya Mixed Secondary School in Teso North District has been closed down indefinitely with more than 280 students sent home Thursday evening.

The decision   follows the abrupt transfer of the school principal, his deputy and a former deputy principal over alleged deterioration of education standard of the school.

Teso North DC Josphine Onunga ordered for the immediate closure of the School after consultation with the TSC Busia county director Beatrice Lukal and the District Education Board where they agreed to send the students home.

The DC recommended for the transfer of the three teachers Oroni Baraza (the principal), George Oria (deputy) and Florence Oroni   a former deputy head teacher over what they termed as decline of school performance ever since they reported in the school.

The school in January had a total of 450 students but currently has a population of 280 students, a factor that was prompted by massive transfer of the students to other schools.

Since January the students have gone on rampage two times demanding for the quick transfer of the deputy principal whom they said has been using abusive words and also protesting  what they termed restricted interaction with female students .

The DC’s decision was condemned by the Maendeleo  ya wanawake chair lady Mrs. Mary Okedi who accused the DC for  taking action on herself instead of including other stakeholders  expressing fear over the girls who were sent home saying that they might end up in early marriages and quit school forever

She also said that candidates for this year will be affected most calling upon the Ministry of Education to step in to save the situation.
