Higher Education Minister urges government to increase the number of public universities to 12

Higher Education Minister Prof Margaret Kamar says the government is aiming at increasing the number of public universities in the country to reach 12.

She says due to increased demand for the university education there is need for more facilities to cater for the demand.

Speaking in Eldoret Prof. Kamar revealed that the national council of higher learning is set to be renamed Kenya National commission of education and that it will have a mandate to issue licenses to institutions of higher learning in the country.

She said that the government is planning to restructure education sector to ensure that it takes a lead as the country strives to attain vision 2030.

The Minister says the restructuring plans are underway noting that the step is aimed at improving institutions of higher learning in the country.

Prof Kamar has mentioned Kenya Institute of Education-KIE, Kenya National Education Council KNEC and middle learning institutions as some of the major targets.
