Nandi county celebrated the day of the African Child under this year’s theme: “Conflict and Crisis in Africa-Protecting the Child’s rights” while perpetuating girl child education.
Addressing students and the public at the celebrations held at St. Peters High Class primary school in Kapsabet, Nandi county commissioner Mrs. Lucy Mulili who presided over the function, stressed the importance of educating the girl child urging parents to consider it accordingly.
Mulili insisted that parents should cater for the rights of their children by ensuring they access quality education adding that educating a girl child is like educating the nation thus appealed to the parents to strictly ensure their kids go to school.

She said that the government together with education stakeholders should partner in advocating for the importance of a girl child education and teachers to sensitize every child about their rights.
The commissioner disclosed that some parts of Nandi county are still exercising child negligence giving an example of Tindiret sub-county where she noted quite a number of children are not in school.
She urged parents, teachers and education stake holders to ensure those kids are taken to school immediately .
“The government has put adequate resources to ensure kids are educated, it has committed its resources to children issues.” She sighed.
Nandi county has a total of 74,000 children enrolled in pre-primary schools with 1,174 ECD Centers thus appreciating the county government of Nandi for the efforts.
She said over 4800 vulnerable families in Nandi are enjoying the support of the government through education.
On the other hand County children officer, Mrs. Hellen Wanyama said there are still cases of child negligence in Nandi and have encountered 300 cases since the beginning of this year.
Wanyama urged the parents to take care of their children well by protecting them against any force wanting them to use the toll-free line of 116 for any child abuse cases to get help.
She announced that Nandi county was ranked position three Nationally in reporting matters related to children thus applauded the efforts of the parents in dealing with such issues.
