Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has issued a disaster declaration in the County after persistent rains, storms, floods, rock falls, and mudslides experienced in the past two weeks in Nandi.
While making the declaration along with MCAs from the affected areas, Sang declared that some sections of the county including Nandi hills, Aldai and Tindiret constituencies have experienced landslides which have left approximately 1,050 people homeless and have been forced to seek refuge at Cherondo landslide transitional camp.
He cited that 243 households have been directly affected by the landslides and his government in conjunction with the Kenya Red Cross have distributed blankets, food, water and medical supplies to the residents who are currently at Cherondo landslide transitional camp. He further appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto to help them acquire unused land left by absentee landowners as alternative land to resettle those living in perennial landslide-prone areas.
He urged the national government through the Ministry of Devolution and Planning to partner with his administration in order to address the urgent needs of the affected residents and also called upon all the elected leaders from the region to chip in and offer a helping hand to the displaced persons.
The County boss urged residents who are still living in the landslide prone areas to quickly move to safer places during this period of heavy downpour.
