Nandi County woman representative Tecla Tum has urged the residents to embrace avocado farming as it has a ready market internationally and generates good income compared to maize and milk.
Speaking during the launch of an avocado farming project in Lolduga village, Olessos ward in Nandi County, Tum cited an avocado’s favourable growth stage, adding that the yield is plenty which translates to high profits.
She revealed that her interest in avocado farming is due to the challenges facing the maize farming sector and very low returns farmers get from milk. “An avocado fruit produces many fruits per year and I urge residents to make Nandi a dominant avocado farming region,” she said.
She said her office will provide a total of 13,000 avocado seedlings to women and youth, adding that the yields after four years the income generated will be plenty from the sector.
