Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s PA Micheal Oyamo will remain in police detention for a further 14 days at Muthaiga police station as investigations continue into the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno. Oyamo was arraigned at the Milimani Law Court on Wednesday morning after being flown to Nairobi from Homa Bay on Tuesday, where he had been re-arrested after an initial release.
In his ruling, Judge Luka Kimaru said Oyamo’s rights must be upheld, and his lawyers and relatives can access him while in police detention. The judge said after fourteen days he’ll be brought back to the court to either be freed or charged.
Homa Bay County police commander Marius Tum had confirmed on Tuesday that the suspect had been released in compliance with a court order issued by the senior resident magistrate. However, plans to arraign him at the Homa Bay High court were shelved and he was taken to Nairobi, with his safety cited as a reason behind the move.
