Parents in Lugari Sub County have been urged to assist their children nurture their inborn talents besides supporting their education. Addressing parents, guardians and other education stakeholders, Mrs. Marystella Nyukuri, headteacher Macho Muslim primary school who are the current national champions music class 266, said parents should not fuss over their children participating in extra curricula activities.
She urged them to allow children nurture their artistic talents through sporting activities including drama and music competitions, singling out performing arts as one of the major sources of employment for the youths, all over the world.
She added that sporting activities played a crucial role in enhancing their children’s general health besides acting as an income earner comparable to other jobs.
Mrs. Nyukuri noted that it was disheartening that some parents had chosen to curtail their children from participating in these activities arguing that it distracted them from their academic pursuits.
At the same time, she dismissed existing fallacies alleging that students who performed well in sports produced dismal results in academics arguing that her school had endeavored to produce all rounded graduates. “It is instructive to note and parents should know that the likes of Joseph J Masiga and William Obwaka who are among our country’s soccer
greats honed their sporting talents while in school and they went on to pursue
education up to university and graduated as doctors,” she said, “The current on-form Japan based and Harambee stars striker Michael Olunga is a degree holder after successfully pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Geospatial Engineering at the Technical University of Kenya,” said Mrs. Nyukuri.
Identifying Tottenham’s Kenyan midfielder, Victor Wanyama as an example, the
teacher told students and parents to take sports seriously, saying the sector had the potential to economically empower the youth compared to white color jobs.
She added that some graduates from the school have managed to exhibit their sporting talents and at the same time performed well in class adding that a good number had managed to secure bursaries in national, County and extra County secondary schools as a result of sports.
