Learning activities are at stake at Soy Sambu DEB primary school in Tongaren constituency after the ongoing rains impounding the area caused five latrines used by boys in the school to collapse.
According to the school’s headmaster James Wanjala Wekesa he joined the school four years ago and the school has never had enough latrines to cater for the number of pupils in the school saying after the five collapsed they are in urgent need of more.
He disclosed to have informed the area ward administrator and the school management board about the issue who immediately embarked on setting up ways of ensuring the situation is dealt with saying they would not wish for the school to be closed down by the ministry of health officers.
The schools’ head said that they may need more than half a million to construct new latrines at the school to have them carry out normal activities as it used to be before.
Area political activist Stephen Wafula Wamalwa called upon the County government and the national government to step in and help salvage the situation in the school saying being one of the oldest schools in the area it needs to be helped out to have the pupils’ access education with ease.
He urged that with the County government’s special programs department needs to have a quick response to such situations saying the pupils and parents depend so much on such public institutions.
“It is just fortunate that no one was hurt during the incident as all the pupils had gone home. We should work towards averting disaster,” he added
He lashed at the area MCA Gerishom Namasake whom was one time the headmaster of the school saying he has not yet visited the school and efforts to reach him have been futile saying as area stakeholders they will mobilize support to ensure new toilets are built in the school.
He further called upon officers in charge of health and sanitation to be visiting schools on a regular basis to access situations of the school and avoid the disasters that may be caused by accidents that could be avoided.
