One hundred and six students from poor families in Tongaren constituency learning in different secondary schools and middle-level colleges have benefitted after receiving cheques to pay part of their school fees from the affirmative action fund bursary.
Addressing education stakeholders while issuing the cheques, Bungoma County woman representative Dr. Reginalda Wanyonyi said Kshs 6 million has been set aside for the bursary for the students in Bungoma County and Tongaren constituency will get slightly more than Kshs 1 million.
She added that since the inception of the fund many students have been able to benefit saying it has offered them a platform to continue their education uninterrupted saying education is the only equalizer for students from rich and poor families.
The Bungoma County woman representative also gave out sanitary pads to students at Naitiri friends girls secondary school in efforts to help them have uninterrupted learning in their academic field.
Regarding politics, she called upon residents to re-elect her in her position saying she has been able to achieve a lot during her tenure saying she has initiated a lot of projects in schools across the County and if given a chance she will be able to do more.
She also supported the decision by the presidents to skip the national debate saying he has done a lot for the country which is visible and did not need to appear on a debate to elaborate what Kenyans have already seen.
She also called upon the security agents in the County to be on alert and tackle emerging issues of insecurity saying it is unfortunate that in a span of one week two people have lost their lives due to insecurity related crimes.
Tongaren Jubilee aspirant John Murumba Chikati claimed there is a ploy by some aspirants in the constituency to ferry voters from the neighbouring Trans Nzoia County and from as far as Uganda to vote and cause disruption during the voting day.
He said it is unfortunate that such an electoral offence is being planned saying they are not only targeting Tongaren but also Sirisia, Kimilili and Webuye West constituencies. She said they’ve already reported the issue to the police and called upon them to be vigilant. However, he urged the residents to maintain peace before and after the election day.
