EACC officials have arrested over 20 MCAs from Trans Nzoia on allegations of embezzlement of funds and graft. 18 others are also on the radar, together with the assembly speaker David Sifuna and the clerk.
The 38 were allegedly involved in the misuse of funds, when in September 2014, they received Kshs 47,000 to “send off” a late colleague, the then Matumbei MCA Ronald Matongolo, citing they had to travel to Nairobi.
Another case of graft that drew attention revolved around a report by the controller of budget, that cited Trans Nzoia MCAs earned an average of Kshs 177,849 per month in the first quarter of the 2015/2016 financial year, a figure that stands above the amount recommended by Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
The MCAs are due to face charges in court.
