Transport activities along Makutano–Ivona road in Mautuma location Lugari Sub County have been paralyzed following the collapse of Mukuyu bridge. Speaking to West Media at the scene, residents led by Lugari Peace committee treasurer Mrs. Imelda Kibande regretted the incident and appealed for quick intervention to help build a new bridge on the busy road that links them to Makutano market.
They said the bridge collapsed following heavy rains witnessed in the area on Wednesday evening. The residents said it was unfortunate that the bridge has collapsed when their children are sitting for the end term examination arguing that there are hundreds of children who cross the bridge to St. Louis Saisi and Mukuyu primary schools as well as Mukonge and Mukuyu girls secondary schools.
They said if quick intervention is not taken it will also affect the distribution of KCPE and KCSE examinations. They also argued that the collapsed bridge had created great hardship to business persons, motorists and residents in the area appealing to both the national and county governments to move in quickly to save the situation.
“The collapse of the bridge has not only affected our socio-economic activities but has also affected our lives in general and that is why we are requesting the concerned authorities to construct a new bridge to save the situation,” said one of the businessmen at Makutano Market.
Mr. Moses Ombeva a boda boda operator said the bridge had earlier shown signs of collapsing following several cracks on it. “I raised concern over cracks on this bridge in the month of August but none of our leaders seemed to be concerned and finally what I had raised has happened it is fortunate that nobody was injured,” said Ombeva.
Speaking when he visited the scene Mautuma Member of County assembly
Stephen Mulonga regretted the incident but assured residents of re-construction of a new bridge in the area.
