A woman drowns in R. Nzoia as rains continues
A somber mood engulfed Mabonde location in Kiminini Sub County when a mentally challenged woman was found drowned in River Nzoia following the heavy rains pounding in the region.
According to an eye witness who is also a human Rights activist in Trans Nzoia county Mr. Masanja Degret the woman woke up at night without his husbands knowledge and left, when the husband knew that the wife was not around he called upon neighbors of the area and a search ensued for the better part of the night without bearing fruits
When it dawned in the morning, the search continued till 11.00 am when the body of the deceased was found drowned in River Nzoia.
It took the initiative of villagers who waded into the river and retrieved the body.
Eye witness however cautioned locals against being found at the river banks especially during this rainy season when the area is witnessing heavy rainfall to avoid more causalities, confirming that it was not the first case being reported.
Mr. Masanja appealed to the Government to put up measures of helping those people who are staying in low lands and swampy areas as they are mostly vulnerable especially during this season due to frequent flooding of the river that has been breaking its banks during heavy rain falls.
He also appealed to the National Government and the County Government of Trans Nzoia to work in solidarity and establish disaster mitigation centers and set aside money for such calamities so that it compensates the victims that might be affected.
He faulted the disaster management team for lack of personel who their role is to respond to disasters whenever it happens disclosing that the manner into which the county Government of Trans Nzoia in conjunction with the Red cross teams hiring of special people to deal with emerging disasters from other counties of Bungoma and Uasin Gishu counties was a big joke for the disaster management team.
The red cross team from Trans Nzoia county under their chairman Ronald Masindano has been hiring personnel to deal with disasters from the neighboring counties of Bungoma and Uasin Gishu an action that the chairman Masindano has been complaining to the county Government especially to MCAS to take a bill in the County Government that will see that the personnel qualified in disaster management are employed within the county so that they can deal with such situations whenever they unfolds.
“I call upon the county Government of Transnzoia through MCAS to present a bill in the County Assembly that will see establishment of disaster management experts employed by the county so that we avoid these continued loss of lives to our citizens”, said Masindano.
The body of deceased was taken to Kitale District Hospital mortuary as police start investigations concerning her death.
