A 14 years old boy has died while the mother and her five children have been admitted in hospital after eating a meal suspected to be poisonous.
The meal was prepared by their mother Phyllis Nanyama from Machakaha village in Webuye west constituency on Wednesday evening.
Phyllis the mother, said that she prepared the meal that comprised of ugali and traditional vegetables called “lishebhebhe”, pumpkin leaves.
She said that one of her daughters who had gone to visit their grandmother was not at home and hence was not affected.
“I sent one of my children to a nearby posho mill to buy maize and grind flour since the remaining flour wasn’t enough and when he came back I added to the remaining flour that was still in the house before preparing it and giving them to eat,” she said.
She said that she had often prepared the meal by plucking the vegetables from her farm.
She said that around 9. pm the children began to vomit and diarrhoea while complaining of stomach aches.
“I alerted the neighbors’ who came and carried as to the nearest dispensary of Bokoli where one of the children died.” She said
“The doctors then referred as to Bungoma referral hospital where we went and were given some tabs and told to go back home.” The mother added
She told journalists at Webuye hospital that when they went back home the situation worsened and her relatives took her back to Webuye hospital.
Webuye hospital medical superintendent Patrick Mutoro said that they received the family and after doing medical tests they found that they had taken a meal that was somehow poisonous.
He said that they received the mother with her three children Bosco Mukono aged eleven, Dainel Mukono aged four years and Bradly Mukono aged two years.
Mutoro said that the other children, Fidel Mutoro and Ivon Mutoro had been taken to Bungoma hospital.
Mutoro said that they had given them treatment and that they were responding well to medication.
He said that the family might have been affected by acute food poisoning that might have been caused by poor cooking of food.
He called upon mothers to ensure they prepare there meals well before giving it to the family.
