A sorrowful cloud engulfed Tekoa village in Lumakanda location, Lugari sub county after a one year and eight months old baby drown in a deep hole filled with water. According to the deceased’s mother Ms. Susan Mukasia who works as a maid in the home of Mr. Edward Muhadi, she left her son playing with a friend in her employer’s compound as she fetched water from the hole which is outside the compound and ferried it to her church where the process of making bricks is going on.
The baby slipped and drowned in the hole, and according to her, she had gone two rounds and as she was going back for a third one she found a gathering that shocked her with the news. She said since the boy had seen her going that direction and back he might have thought she was there and went to look for her before he slipped and drowned.
Neighbors joined together and managed to retrieve the body from the 15ft hole. According to Mukasia’s employer Mr. Edward Muhadi the hole was meant to be a toilet and he was preparing to start construction work. He said the hole had been covered with logs but Mukasia had removed them to enable her to fetch water from it.
The deceased’s family requested police to allow them bury the baby saying they had no complaints about his death. Confirming the incident, Mwamba sub location assistant Chief Edwin Nashirobe urged parents to take care of their children. He also appealed to them to ensure that all dangerous holes in the area were well covered to avoid such tragedies.
