A ten year old girl died after drowning in River Nzoia in Chevaywa location Matete Sub County.
Confirming the incident, Chevaywa location chief Alex Goricho said Belinda Nelima a grade six pupil at Makhukhuni primary school was looking for firewood along the river in company of her friends when she slipped and drowned.
He said despite the girl drowning at 11am her friends went home and kept quiet until 4:30pm it’s when her parents received information about her drowning.
Goricho has cautioned parents against sending their children to collect firewood or allowing them to play near the river.
He said during rainy season the water carries logs and branches from the upper side of the river which are sometimes thrown on the bank of the river and the residents collect them for firewood.
Efforts to search for the body are going on with help of expert divers from the Icare school of First Aid.
