A somber cloud hung over Mabanga village, Chekalini location of Lugari Sub County after a 44 year old woman was stabbed to death while on her way to a market place Thursday morning.
Confirming the incident, Lugari, OCPD, Mr. Bernard Macharia, said a Mr. James Masinde Wangatia is said to have waylaid the deceased, Mrs. Alice Nasambu, near Mabanga area along the Webuye – Eldoret highway before stabbing her several times using a sharp knife at about 6 a.m.
According to eye witnesses, Mrs. Nasambu was among early risers who were heading towards Kipkarren market centre at the time of the tragic incident.
Macharia said preliminary investigations point at domestic conflict, where it is claimed prior to the tragedy the deceased and her husband had differed over how to spend proceeds from a piece of land that they had intended to sell.
“Reliable reports claim the woman had demanded that part of the proceeds be used to pay her dowry against wishes of the husband,” said Macharia adding the woman had returned to her matrimonial home where she has been staying for the last two weeks.
After committing the murder the man disappeared in the neighboring Uasin Gishu county but he was trailed by boda boda operators who managed to catch him later in the afternoon hiding at St. Mary’s area in Turbo Sub County, but the suspect removed his knife ready to stab one of the operators before the angry mob set upon him with all manner of crude weapons seriously injuring him.
He was however rescued by police officers and rushed to Lugari Sub County hospital where he was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment and his body was moved to Webuye Sub County Hospital mortuary where the remains of his wife had been taken earlier.
Meanwhile, Macharia has cautioned officials in charge of land management in the area against commissioning sale of pieces of land in which family members are in disagreement.
“Land officers should ensure there is an agreement between both parents and children before okaying sale of family land in order to avoid such incidents in future,” said Macharia.
