Kabras Education Fund boosting academics in Malava

By Brendah Wawire

In an effort to raise the academic standards of Malava region, a group of locals have come up with an organization to help fund bright but needy students, the Kabras Education Fund, (KEF).

This body sponsors Kabras students from the region drawing its funds from contributions from its members and help from other cooperates.

According to the organization’s chair Juma Chitiavi, they are out to give the students an opportunity to study with a vision of developing a pool of professionals in future.

Chitavi said that at the moment, most people from the region specialize in education and security as police officers and thus the organization is working on a mentor-ship programme which will encourage the students to venture into various professions.

The mentor-ship programme in-cooperates both the beneficiaries and non beneficiaries from the area.

KEF that began its mission last year saw two needy students join high school. A girl in Moi Girls Eldoret and a boy in Musingu Boys in Kakamega county.

This year, 10 students will benefit by each being paid for full school fees.

Chitavi revealed that the students will get approximately Kshs. 53000 according to the government’s school fees guidelines and thus looking forward to spend close to a half a million.

Amos Chilai the organization’s vice chair revealed that the organization is overwhelmed by the number of applications they receive given that it has a membership of 100 people.

Chilai said that they are however working with other organizations including the government to ensure that deserving cases get an opportunity to sturdy.

He added that they are also working closely with schools to ensure that the students join good schools that will help in achieving their future dreams.

Chilai emphasised that the region lacks the required professionals and thus are out to mentor them.

“We want to give the needy and bright students an opportunity to study and thereafter develop a pool of professionals that lack in the region.” Chilai said.

The Malava sub county administrator Luke Otipo called upon the beneficiaries to work hard so as to motivate the organization to stand by them.

He called upon their parents to work hand in hand with the organization explaining that they will have to come in and support their children in terms of other needs.
