Five people survived with serious injuries following a grisly road accident involving two vehicles near Mbande Bridge in Matete Sub County along the Kakamega-Webuye road on Tuesday evening.
Confirming the incident, Matete OCPD, Mr. Justus Maina said the accident occurred when a Nissan matatu, KBK 374G, collided head on with a Toyota salon, KBE 827J, at about 7. pm at Mapaipai area, a few metres from the bridge.

“The matatu was traveling to Webuye while the salon was heading to Kakamega from Webuye,” said Maina, who confirmed that the two drivers and three passengers aboard the matatu sustained injuries.
According to the OCPD, the private vehicle’s driver was attempting to overtake a motorcycle when he rammed into the matatu before the vehicles plunged into a roadside ditch.
The matatu driver was identified as Mr. Nelson Kirwa, while Mr. Aggrey Mmbwanga was driving the salon car.
The five were rescued and rushed to Webuye Sub County hospital by good Samaritans where they are receiving treatment.
The two vehicles were towed to Kabras police station.
Mr. Maina has appealed to motorists and other road users to take caution in order to reduce accident related incidents in the area.
