Residents of Ivona village in Lugari and Kakamwe in Tongaren of Kakamega and Bungoma counties respectively have been cautioned against using the incomplete modern footbridge along Nzoia River, which connects the two counties.

Bridging The Gap Africa’s Kenyan representative, Mr. Mark Okello made the caution  when he visited the site where he briefed the media on progress of work on the footbridge, whose construction commenced last year.

“Though the footbridge is about  80% complete, it is still unsafe for human and animal use,” said Okello  who observed some locals had already started using it to cross between the two ends.

Okello shared with residents from both sides on possible dangers, including drowning and fatal deaths, which might occur as a result of using the incomplete arch shaped bridge.

He urged them to remain patient as workmanship on the bridge is being completed before it will officially be handed over to the community in mid April this year.

“We, however, are almost done,” Okello, who also doubles as the organization’s consultant , told the anxious residents.

The official hailed the organization on its decision to construct the footbridge, which he remarked that besides enhancing trade ties between Kakamega and Bungoma counties, it will also help reduce the cases of deaths associated with raging waters of river Nzoia.

“The river has claimed hundreds of lives and we pray and hope such will be a thing of the past,” said Okello.

Apart from the Ivona – Kakamwe footbridge, the official disclosed the Organization, had completed construction of other crossings at Ndalu and Mwiba adding that in total it intends to construct eight  bridges along the same river.

“Apart from installing footbridges along Nzoia River, the organisation plans to construct a similar one along Kipkarren River, which will connect Lugari, Chekalini and Lumakanda wards,” revealed Okello.
