Robbers break into school and steal property
A gang of robbers broke into St. Teresa’s Mukunga primary school in Likuyani sub county, Kakamega County and made away with property worth thousands of shillings.
According to the area sub county director of education David Esemele Mwandihi, the heavily armed gang invaded the school at night and seriously injured a sentinel using crude weapons before breaking into the school administration block.
He said the unknown number of gangsters tied the guard’s hands and legs together using a rope, sealed his mouth with a cello tape and carried him to the administration block corridor where they assaulted him.
One of the thugs is said to have gained entry into the administration block after breaking a window and opened the back door which had been locked from inside and they all matched in and stole property.
The property included text books, two computers and a photocopying machine, all estimated at over Ksh. 100,000.
Mwandihi said nobody knew when the attack occurred and that the guard was discovered by his colleague who had arrived at the school early in the morning to relieve him from duty.
The official expressed his disappointment with increased cases of robbery in schools within Likuyani Sub County and appealed for security to be beefed up in all schools within the sub county and thorough investigation to be carried out to ensure the suspects face full wrath of law.
“We are now even wondering what is the motive because there have been a series of robberies in our schools and this is really negating on our schools performance, just two weeks ago the robbers invaded Kware primary school and made away with books worth millions of shillings and that was not first time for that school to be robbed,” said
Mwandihi
“Prior to that, Mukunga primary school had also lost books to thugs and a similar incident had been witnessed at Nangili, Kisigame and Aligula primary schools.” He added.
He said it was disappointing that in all these incidences no one had been apprehended nor the stolen property recovered.
Mwandihi proposed each school to have at least two night guards saying with the rolling out of laptop programme most school are likely to be targeted by robbers.
The school deputy head teacher Mr. Maurice Akwale has appealed to stakeholders and well wishers to aid the institution in order to help restore it back to its normal position.
The school guard Mr. Charles Olunya who was injured by the thugs was rushed to Kongoni Dispensary where he was still receiving medical attention by time of going to press.
