Victims of storms disaster living in Chwele are seeking compensation after they were left out when their fellows of Sirisia Namwela ward and those from Khachonge Luuya Bwake ward were compensated.
The disaster management department of the Bungoma County led by Julius Bakasa has been blamed for showing favoritism when compensating the families that were affected by the storms in Sirisia
The member of the county assembly Chwele/Kabuchai ward in Bungoma county James Mukhogo said the county openly showed favoritism to some affected families as others were not compensated and are left struggling and sleeping in the cold.
He said that victims from Sirisia Namwela ward composing of 100 families and those from Khachonge Luuya Bwake ward of 40 families received aid from the disaster management department while their counterpart from Chwele up to date have not received any despite being left in a sorry situation.
Mukhongo said most of the families are widows who have school going children and are struggling to make ends meet
“Despite the disaster department sending me to take pictures in order to receive aid sometimes back, nothing has been done to date, he lamented.
He said that in the 2016/16 budget the department was allocated 50 millions to help in case of any calamity and it’s a pity some families have been ignored and continue suffering without help
He now wants Julius Bakasa to make sure there is equal allocation of help to affected families and the matter taken as an emergency to restore the lost hope to the families considering the rains are still pouring.
The mca however has proposed for more allocation of funds to enable the disaster management department fulfill its mandate to the people in the near future.
He has however cautioned families staying near swampy areas to take full measures and move to safer places to avoid more calamities.
