The Commission on Revenue Allocation Chief Executive Officer George Ooko on Tuesday made a tour of the refurbished Busia County Stadium where he lauded the efforts the County Government had put in revamping the facility.
“I must commend you for the good work. I know much more is needed to bring the facility to international standards but the efforts put so far are laudable,” he said.
Flanked by the County Executive Committee member for Culture and Sports Martin Kafwa, Ooko urged the County Government to sponsor a football team that will use the facility for its home matches in the top leagues.
“I want the County Government to use the land that has the social hall and a shop to construct a gymnasium that will host indoor games like the Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi. A stand without shades should be constructed for fans who wish to watch matches. The County Government should also involve architects to explore the possibilities of improving the main stand,” he said.
Ooko said Athletics Kenya officials should be involved in improving the athletics track and include other facilities which have been excluded and start an athletic club to enable the stadium host international meetings.
The CEO said Busia needs to emulate Kakamega and Vihiga which have sponsored teams in top flight football league which have brought fame to their respective counties besides generating revenue.
“The move will see at least 30 boys employed and the place transformed into a major resource for the county. All these can become a reality in the next five years or so,” he said.
Kafwa said the County spent Sh27million in coming up with the refurbished stadium that has volleyball, netball and basketball courts
Ooko was received at the facility by Sports Officer Margaret Oduma, Sports Technician Robert Endire and Culture Officer Jacinta Mwandala. Also present was Director Administration in the Office of the Governor Robert Muganda.
