Two people died on the spot after a motorbike collided with a lorry at Karas area along the Kitale-Kapenguria-Lodwar highway in an accident last night.
The deceased, two young men in their twenties, a bodaboda rider and his passenger died.
Confirming the incident, West Pokot Traffic Base Commander Dennis Kaburu said that the incident occurred at 1 a.m.
Kaburu said that the motorbike rider checked into the busy road without checking the state of the road and crushed with the lorry.
“The motorbike entered the road at a junction without knowing the lorry was coming,” he said.
Mr Kaburu blamed the motorbike rider for negligence and not following the road rules.
“Many motorbike riders are not trained and this has led to many problems. The motorbike riders need to be educated on road safety rules,” said Kaburu.
Kaburu said the driver and the turn boy in the lorry were not injured.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kapenguria county hospital mortuary.
He asked drivers in the area to follow road safety rules and avoid over speeding to shun occurrence of accidents in the area during this festive season.
Kaburu warned motorists against over indulging and careless driving especially on roads near schools.
“We have also warned those people who drink and drive and we are going to take stern measures,” he said.
Mr. Kaburu said that bodaboda operators need to be educated on the dangers of over speeding.
“One should start operating a motorbike after receiving the needed training to avoid loss of lives and injuries on our roads,”he said.
He urged passengers not to tolerate overspeeding bodaboda riders.
Kaburu said that the county has experienced a big number of fatal accidents involving bodaboda operators. “They should ensure they use the equipment as required. We should put up mechanisms to ensure that this comes to an end because the number of motorbike accidents has increased exponentially,” he said.
