Residents of Tongaren Sub County have been urged to embrace modern farming methods to enable them to reap more from food crops farming as well as animal rearing.

Speaking during a field day at Mukuyuni, (DESECE) Development Education services for Community Empowerment director Sophie Elizabeth Kibuywa said with new developments being witnessed in each sector people have to change with time so as to be relevant.

She said with the use of modern technology a small piece of land can be subdivided and used  for different farming activities that will, in the end, bring much profit to the farmer saying people should not be focused on white collar jobs only.

She added that as an organization they have partnered with the ministry of agriculture in order to teach farmers on the use of modern technology in farming, saying with the area having large tracks of fertile land the issue of hunger should never be experienced.

However, she urged the residents not to sell their maize at a cheaper price during this harvesting season saying many have fallen victim to selling their maize to middlemen at a throwaway price and have ended up buying the same maize later at a higher price.

Her sentiments were echoed by Tongaren Sub County Agricultural Officer Susan Ngera who insisted that the farmers should form village community-based organizations that may help them store their maize together and in the end sell it at a fair price.

Some of the farmers also called upon the County government to speed up the construction of a maize miller at Brigadier saying it will help them to deal with the issue of middlemen who frequent the Sub County especially during this harvest season to buy their maize at a cheaper price.

During the field day health services such as voluntary testing and counseling (VCT) as well as de-worming of young children.
