A man died on the spot while his son and nephew escaped with serious injuries following a grisly road accident at Nangili-Kona along the Eldoret–Kitale road in Likuyani Sub County.
According to multiple sources who witnessed the tragedy, the accident occurred at about 7.00pm on Tuesday when a lorry rammed into a motorcycle, instantly killing the old man, identified as Mr. Joseph Sichangi.
“The lorry driver lost control before hitting the motorbike,” said the witness, adding the lorry, which was travelling from Kitale to Eldoret direction, was over speeding at the time of the accident.
The eyewitnesses revealed the deceased was the father of the motorbike rider and uncle to the second survivor.
“The three were riding from Nangili market to their home at Miti Moja village in Kongoni location,” added our witness.
The lorry driver ran away from the scene immediately, leaving the victims trapped under the vehicle.
The evening accident disrupted transport activity between the two towns for several hours due to a traffic snarl up for about three kilometres.
The locals blamed the traffic jam on the traffic department, accusing them of what they described as laxity and failure to arrive at the scene on time.
“Even after arriving late they started harassing people who had rescued the accident victims,” alleged one of the locals.
The injured were rushed to Elgon View Hospital, while the deceased’s body was removed to Eldoret’s Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Uasin Gishu County.
