The Kenya police dog unit has deployed two sniffer dogs to Lugari Sub County in a bid to deal with increasing insecurity in the area.
Presiding over the brief handing ceremony held at Lumakanda township playground, Kakamega County Commandant, Mr. Tito Kilonzi’s decision to deploy the two dogs was as a result of the criminal incidents, including robbery, murder, rape and defilement of innocent mothers and girls that have recently rocked several parts of the Sub County.
“Days of runway crime masterminds are now numbered in Lugari Sub County,” warned Kilonzi as he handed over the dogs to area security team led by Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), Mr. Bernard Macharia and Sub County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO), Mr. Bakari Ndzovu.
Western Regional Dog Master, Mr. Samuel Boit, said the two dogs will be used for patrol and tracking duties as well as sniffing illegal drug substances.
“One of the dogs, Labrador, will be used to detect outlawed drugs while the German shepherd is for patrol and tracking duties,” explained Boit after a brief demonstration exercise.
Area Member of Parliament (MP), Ayub Savula thanked the national government and at the same time urged residents in crime prone zones, especially Marakusi sub location, to remain indoors after 7pm.
“I have asked the OCPD and his team to enhance patrol in Marakusi sub location in order to flash out criminal gangs causing sleepless nights among the locals,” disclosed Savula.
The dogs will be housed in a kernel at Lumakanda police station. The MP revealed the kernel was constructed using funds from the National Constituency Development Fund (NCDF).
