Nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro has defected from ODM to Musalia Mudavadi’s Amani National Congress (ANC). Ongoro said unfairness and mistreatment made her shift camp, “I want to say I’ve moved from ODM to Amani, even though we’re still together in NASA,” she said, “Because of what came across as unfairness, mistreatment.”
Elizabeth Ongoro had earlier been fined Ksh 1 million by the ODM disciplinary Committee after she stormed ODM offices, protesting the direct ticket handed to Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang, and according to the disciplinary Committee, ODM executive director Oduor Ongwen was injured in the incident. The party had recommended that Ongoro moves her vying aspirations another constituency “We have directed that she looks for another constituency,” said Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya when they issued the statement.
However, Ongoro has insisted that she has her rights under the constitution, “Under the new constitution, I have my constitutional rights as a human being, as a Kenyan and as a woman,” she said, adding that women have been taken for granted for too long.
She said that the ultimate power rests with Kenyans, citing that there are political ‘mercenaries’ who think they can control the political destinies of other people by doing things unjustly and incorrectly. She insisted that she is in NASA, however, and they are united as an opposition party, “Am peaceful in NASA, our party will produce the next president of Kenya.” She said that nomination processes in different parties should be free and fair while condemning party members who host secret meetings in order to help each other behind the back.
