Residents of Kapsombeiywet village, Soy sub-county in Uasin Gishu county are currently staying in fear after an unknown wild animal attacked and killed their domestic livestock.
Speaking to journalists, area residents expressed worries over the wanton destruction caused by the unknown animal. They revealed that so far over 30 sheep have been killed within a period of one four days.
The residents revealed that the wild animal attacks and sips the blood of the sheep, abandoning lifeless carcasses strewn all over. According to Mrs. Rael Korir a recent victim, the animal crept into her compound a few minutes after 2am Thursday night before it
strangled to death ten sheep from her flock.
“The shocking bit of it is that after killing my sheep, the predator siphoned their blood only, leaving behind lifeless carcasses,” narrated Mrs. Korir.
“Responding to the endless barking of dogs, my husband and I woke up, looked around the compound up to the sheep’s enclosure but there was nothing. We went back to sleep,” she added.
Mrs. Korir said they were shocked to see the dead sheep when she went to milk the cows at about six o’clock in the morning.
According to another farmer, Michael Cheboi the strange animal killed five sheep on Wednesday night, with similar allegations being made by his immediate neighbour who lost
about eight sheep. On his part, Mr. Joseph Lagat claimed he lost four sheep to the wild animal.
The worried residents are now calling for urgent help from the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) in order to banish and establish the identity of the animal and save them from incurring more damages.
