President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that no Kenyan should pay more than Kshs 700 in the economy class trip from Mombasa to Nairobi in the newly launched Standard Gauge Railway train dubbed ‘Madaraka Express’. During the official flagging off of the Madaraka Express, President Uhuru Kenyatta said they’ve calculated the costs Kenyans use to travel to Nairobi from Mombasa, “When Kenyans use buses, the cost is about Kshs 1200. We’ve decided that the common mwananchi should be able to board this train and shouldn’t pay more than Kshs 700,” said President Kenyatta. He added that the average container that transports goods, which used to cost Kshs 100,000 from Mombasa to Nairobi, shouldn’t surpass Kshs 50,000.

President Uhuru Kenyatta thanked the partners who have helped to ensure that the project is a success, “I want to thank our partners and our friends from the Peoples Republic of China for the support, for the elevation of our relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership,” he said. He said that they’ll intensify the relationship between China and Kenya with a clear vision of a win-win situation that benefits both China and Kenya, in order to enhance the shared prosperity of the two nations.
