President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that the vandalism culprits who messed up part of the Standard Gauge Railway should be hanged. While addressing Kenyans at the flagging off of the SGR train, President Kenyatta said that as the country’s leader, he will exercise his constitutional right to decree that they face the stern penalty. “As the president, I couldn’t allow even those who were meant to face the hangman’s noose to undergo that sentence, instead, I thought it would be better if they served a life sentence,” said the President, “Today, however, for those who are guilty of destroying the property of Kenyans, the property of our children, I will decree that they face the gallows.”

Four suspects are being held in connection with the vandalism of the Standard Gauge Railway at Kibanda-Hasara in Kwale County. He said that the Standard Gauge Railway doesn’t belong to any individual or the government but has been constructed by citizens’ money, therefore, it belongs to Kenyans. “There is a law which states that if you mess up with the property belonging to Kenyans, critical infrastructure, it’s called economic sabotage and it’s a capital offence,” said President Kenyatta.
