University lecturers have threatened to down their tools if the 2013-1017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which was signed between them and the state isn’t implemented by midnight, adding that the strike will take effect on Monday. The CBA allocates Ksh 10 billion to lecturers and non-teaching staff of three university unions.

UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga has said the impending strike will continue until the CBA is fully implemented. He said that they had agreed on a certain set payment which they haven’t received from the government, “Today is the set deadline for the implementation of the CBA by the government,” he said, “Therefore the government should be blamed for any impending collapse in the higher education programme.”

The union said that no one in the government is ready to address their plight as the CBA is still in writing. “The government and the university councils are seemingly oblivious to the effects which will hit the students who are moulding their futures in the universities,” he said.

The officials present assured the government that this is going to be the biggest strike they’ve ever conducted.
