Residents of Kuywa from Webuye West constituency, Bungoma County, are a happy lot after steps to reconstruct the bridge that collapsed three months ago commenced on Tuesday. Three consignments arrived at the river banks of Kuywa river carrying construction material for the reconstruction of the bridge. The bridge linked Bungoma and Kakamega Counties and its collapse affected many businesses. The bridge collapsed three months ago after a truck that was ferrying molasses crashed the metallic bridge, killing three people. The reconstruction project was launched officially by Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama.

He said for the last three months he had sympathised with the residents especially the pupils from the two Sub Counties of Navakholo and Webuye West, who regularly used the bridge to get to school. “I want to thank the Jubilee government and especially the Transport Cabinet Secretary and his Principal Secretary who ensured the case was dealt with faster from the moment I launched my complaint,” said Wanyama.

Wanyama said the reconstruction will be vital for both the academic sector and business people, and he urged the residents to give the site engineer time so that he can finish the work, adding that Sitikho residents will benefit from the job opportunity, “I have instructed him and we have agreed that all the work will be given to Sitikho ward residents and he has confirmed that he will employ twenty youths,” said the MP, “Those who will get the opportunity please cooperate with the engineers.”

He also appealed to the residents not to vandalise the bridge by stealing the construction material and bolts as this will weaken the bridge, adding that they should be vigilant so that the reconstructed bridge isn’t overloaded again. The Webuye West MP urged residents to vote for him and Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka in the general elections, adding that they should support Jubilee party. He cited the SGR project and extensive electricity supply as some of the projects accomplished by the government, “You will realise that most homes are connected to electricity and that’s what Jubilee stands for, as opposed to NASA who have no agenda but are full of propaganda,” said Wanyama.
