The government through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has earmarked the upgrading of key linking roads in Kapenguria Township in West Pokot County, to promote access, eliminate congestion and ease traffic flow. The 3.6 Kilometre road project which costs Kshs 182 million is expected to bring prosperity, development and economic growth outside the town.

The roads include Backstreet–Lomut–Karura Road, which is 1 kilometre and Cereals–Chewoyet-Bendera Road, which is 2.6 kilometre. The project which commenced on 5th May 2017 is set to be completed on 5th November 2018.

Local residents are expected to benefit socially and economically through the creation of employment opportunities and increased security.

Speaking while inspecting the work on the roads in Kapenguria, Kenya Roads Rural Authority General Manager of Finance and Administration Mr. Wilson Chirchir said the program will enable easy transportation of goods, services and help ease access in the town. Investment in the town is expected to grow steadily over the coming years and will greatly urbanize the area.

He insisted that the contractor will only be paid after the work reaches 10% completion. “We want to make sure all structures are completed,” he said.

Mr. Chirchir said the project will also involve the construction of parking roads for motorcycles, drainage, and culverts.

Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) North Rift Regional Engineer Edwin Limo said the authority will use Kshs 72 million shillings per year for maintenance of roads in Kapenguria. He said the Authority will work in collaboration with the County government.
