The Swedish Embassy has commended the IEBC for its preparations in the upcoming general elections. The embassy has urged all Kenyans to give the IEBC the space to fulfil its vital role.
In a joint statement by the Heads of the Mission in Kenya, all Kenyans have been called upon to vote on the Election Day and that everyone should feel safe under the protection of security services that guard citizen’s rights.
It explains that it is important for Kenyans to exercise their important democratic right on the 8th of August.
“As international partners, we encourage Kenyans to look beyond their differences to come together to ensure free, fair, credible and peaceful elections,” the statement says.
It explains that a successful poll will secure the extra ordinary promise of the 2010 constitution, strengthen democracy and advance prosperity for all Kenyans.
“It is essential that IEBC staff be safe from harassment or attack and we welcome the government of Kenya’s commitment to providing them with additional security,” the statement reiterates.
The statement also says that the Heads of Missions believe that democracy is the best form of government but it requires determination and commitment.
It breaks down that effective democracy depends not just on government agencies but also on free media and active civil society by informing the public, promoting transparency and rejecting inflammatory reports.
The joint statement comes after various election observers from across the world have come in to witness the general elections. Among them are Commonwealth observers, COMESA observers, EU observers and AU observers who jetted in the country ready for the big task.
The statement has also warned that political competition should never turn into bloodshed and no one should die because of elections.
