Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka has urged Bungoma County residents to support the girl child in the society by making sure they are educated and in the end attain relevant certificates to guarantee them job opportunities.
Addressing parents, students and other stakeholders at Kimilili Friends girls’ high school Lusaka said as enshrined in the constitution women are supposed to be given opportunity in every field and therefore they must be supported.
He applauded the signing of a supplementary budget bill by President Kenyatta to have Kshs 25 billion set aside by the Treasury to cater for the free secondary education starting next year saying it will help alleviate the burden on parents.
However, he challenged the employers to also provide equal opportunities to women, equal to men, saying they have the capability of providing the same output as compared to men in different job sectors.
Speaker Lusaka promised to push solicit funds to buy the school a bus saying working closely with the Jubilee government has been beneficial to the people of Bungoma at large and it was evident during his tenure as the first governor in the County with several development projects having been initiated.
“I will not stop working with the people of Bungoma County, and to the best of my ability, I will be willing to help whenever am asked to do so,” he added.
Kimilili legislator Didmus Wekesa Barasa said he will build four classrooms at the school after an appeal from the school principal who raised the issue of increased number of students in the school an issue that has compelled them of crowding them in classes.
He further promised to pay boarding school fees for all the students in the school from Kimilili constituency saying, as a result of his humble background and his current position he is compelled to give back to the society.
Didmus also cautioned the Kimilili public health officer against closing up schools that don’t have enough toilets, and that he should liaise with his office and the education authorities to sort out the issue. He said his office cannot fail to build toilets at a school.
He took the opportunity to lash at opposition leader Raila Odinga for withdrawing from the elections slated for October 26th saying the elections will go on as scheduled as he had not officially signed form 24A.
He also castigated the opposition leaders in their quest for reforms through the ongoing demonstrations saying Kenyans have a right to carry on with their daily activities without interference.
Kimilili girls Principal Juliana Mukitang’a thanked the speaker and the MP for their support to the school and urged the community to also support the girl child education.
