A six-year-old girl was buried alive and more than 300 people displaced at Kapsangar, Pokot South Sub County following a landslide that occurred on Thursday night as a result of heavy rains that have been pounding the area.
Eight people were injured, 13 cows were also buried alive, 46 houses and Kaghmuu primary school was also destroyed by the landslide.

According to Kenya Red Cross West Pokot county coordinator Mr. Carlos Kibet eight people who were injured are recuperating at Kapenguria referral hospital.
He added that Kaghmuu primary school was totally destroyed and more than 300 pupils will be forced to stay at home because the school is no more.
He pointed out that the displaced families are in dire need of humanitarian aid and they have integrated with other members of the community who are in safer places.
“After assessing the impact of the landslides the Kenya Red Cross will supply non-food items to the displaced families. We’ll provide tents, kitchen utensils, blankets mosquito nets and other items,” he said.

West Pokot county police commandant Mr Mathews Kutoh who visited the area confirmed that the landslide had occurred in several places with different magnitude.
He said the most affected place was at the school where the child was buried alive. “We walked for about 5 kilometres assessing the impact of the landslide but we couldn’t manage to get to its tail end. All residents living in the area have been accounted for apart from the 6-year-old girl who died,” he said.
He said the national government will supply relief food and other non-food items to the affected families.
