Doctors at Kapenguria Referral Hospital have successfully conducted the first brain surgery at the Hospital. It was conducted on a 21-year-old patient who was involved in a road accident on Friday last week in Makutano town.

According to the lead consultant surgeon doctor Karuri Maina, the 5-hour surgery was performed to Marvin Odhiambo by a team of 12 specialists from the County.

The patient who had been hit by a lorry while on a motorbike on his way home was reportedly admitted at Kapenguria Referral Hospital on Friday night and on Saturday the patient was referred to Kitale for a CT scan.

At Kitale, after the doctors’ examination, the patient was advised to undergo the surgery and doctors from Kapenguria Hospital took it upon themselves to conduct the surgery.

Karuri noted that said the patient was out of danger and was recuperating well at the facility. “When the patient was brought in the hospital he was bleeding a lot which formed a clot in the brain we had no option but to conduct a brain surgery which turned out to be successful,” he said.

He noted that there is need for more human resource at the County hospital and he encouraged patients to visit the facility for better health services.

The patient’s father Mr. Ibrahim Matende said he had no hopes that his son would survive, “Am delighted my son can recognize people and is responding positively to treatment. We thank the team of doctors who conduct d the surgery,” he said.

Speaking after visiting the patient Governor John Lonyangapuo said the County has made great strides in the health sector as his government continues to increase its budget allocation.

He called on the national government to increase funds to the health sector to ensure better healthcare for Kenyans. “This a historic thing to ever happen in our County since independence. Am delighted that our doctors are committed to offering better services to our people,” he said.
