Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong has called for an affirmative action in education by availing more resources and improving infrastructure in schools along West Pokot, Turkana and Elgeyo Marakwet borders to help learners in the region access education. He urged the government, and other stakeholders to set up more schools along the area as a viable solution to insecurity.
The illiteracy level in the region remains extremely high at about 90 percent and vices like insecurity have increased.
He said this will improve education in schools and address the illiteracy issues. Lochakapong also called on the government through the education ministry to avail more funds for schools along the borders.
Speaking at Masol school, the MP urged the County government to partner with donor agencies to set up schools to allow students from the different communities to mingle and promote coexistence. He said people engaging in criminal vices haven’t got the opportunity to go to school, “Education is the only tool that can transform the lives and minds of people.”
Apart from promoting peace, coexistence and societal development, he said setting up more schools will increase access to education as students won’t have to cover long distances to get to the nearest schools. He said parents should also invest in education to open up more opportunities.
