Pangani Girls High School has once again produced the top KCSE candidate this year, Juliet Otieno, who has scored an A plain, with a performance index of 87.644. Speaking at the KNEC headquarters during the release of the 2018 KCSE exam results, Education CS Amina Mohamed lauded the school for producing top candidates for two years in a row, after producing the country’s top candidate last year. The other top performing candidates that wrap up the top ten slots are Kaluna James from Maseno High School, Edwin Otieno Ouko from Light Academy, Kamweru Mwangi Duncan from Moi High School Kabarak, Humphrey Rasugu from Maseno High School, Mel Christine from Alliance High School, Njenga Brian Ndung’u fro Mang’u Hig School, Osogo Monyenye Wesley from Alliance High School, Nyakeya Charlene Moraa from Moi Girls School Nairobi, Onyando Roy Allan Ochieng’ from Maranda High School.
The Education CS noted there has been an improvement in performances this year, with the number of candidates who scored A plains rising from 142 to 315 this year, “That’s more than double and we are extremely delighted with that result,” she said. The number of candidates who scored the minimum university entry grade of C plus also rose to 90,377 this year from 70,073 last year which is 13.77% compared to last year’s percentage which was 11.38%. Of the 660,204 candidates who sat for the exams, 338,628 (51.29%)were male while 321,576 (48.71%) were female, and the Education CS said that this year had better performing female candidates than male candidates with the leading subjects being English, Kiswahili, CRE, Home Science, Art and Design and Metal Work. CS Amina said 191 people including candidates were arrested and arraigned in court for various exam offences and some 56 cases are still pending in court.
